Description: CORN FIBER XYLAN IS NOTABLY RESISTANT TO THE ACTION OF ENDOXYLANASES, DUE TO MULTIPLE SUBSTITUENTS SUCH AS ARABINOSE, 4-O-METHYLGLUCURONIC ACID, OR OTHER SIDE CHAINS IN ADDITION, SOME OF THE XYLOSE RESIDUES ARE ACETYLATED AND ARABINOSE SIDE CHAINS ARE ESTERIFIED WITH FERULIC ACID. CONSIDERING THE HIGHLY COMPLEX NATURE OF CORN HEMICELLULOSE, IT IS EVIDENT THAT A WIDE ARRAY OF ENZYMES, ACTING SYNERGISTICALLY, IS REQUIRED FOR EFFICIENT DEGRADATION. THE OVERALL AIM OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS THE PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT OF MAJOR HEMICELLULASE ACTIVITIES, WITH THE ADDITION OF SELECTED ACCESSORY ENZYME ACTIVITIES, FOR THE EFFICIENT HYDROLYSIS OF HIGHLY BRANCHED CORN ARABINOGLUCURONOXYLAN. THE OPTIMIZED ENZYME MIXTURES WILL INCREASE THE YIELD OF THE RELEASED SUGARS FROM CORN MATERIALS, WHILE REDUCING THE OVERALL PROCESS COST. MOREOVER, HYDROLYSIS WITH ENZYMES PRESENTING SELECTED SPECIFICITIES, SUCH AS GLUCURONOXYLAN-SPECIFIC XYLANASE AND FERULOYL ESTERASE, WILL ENABLE THE RELEASE OF PREBIOTIC XYLO-OLIGOSACCHARIDES AND ANTIOXIDANT FERULATES FROM CORN FEEDSTOCKS.
