Description: THE BIOUP PROJECT FOCUSES ON THE ENERGY UTILIZATION OF LOCALLY AVAILABLE BIOMASS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF BIOMETHANE THROUGH ANAEROBIC DIGESTION AND FURTHER UPGRADING OF THE PRODUCED BIOGAS. THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT IS TO IDENTIFY THE MOST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR UPGRADING BIOGAS TO BIOMETHANE, WHICH WILL SERVE AS THE FOUNDATION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LARGE-SCALE BIOGAS UPGRADING TECHNOLOGIES IN GREECE. AS PART OF THE PROJECT, EXPERIMENTAL TESTS WILL BE CONDUCTED FOR BIOGAS PRODUCTION AND ITS UPGRADING TO BIOMETHANE THROUGH THREE DIFFERENT UPGRADING METHODS. PROCESS SIMULATIONS, AS WELL AS SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENTS OF THE SYSTEMS, WILL COMPLEMENT THE EXPERIMENTAL TRIALS. THESE EVALUATIONS WILL FOCUS ON BOTH SMALL-SCALE SYSTEMS AND POTENTIAL FUTURE LARGE-SCALE SYSTEMS FOR COMMERCIAL EXPLOITATION.
