| Description: | THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT IS TO PROVIDE SCIENTIFIC CONSULTING SERVICES TO PPC S.A. (PUBLIC POWER CORPORATION OF GREECE) FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROBABILISTIC FRAMEWORK TO ASSESS THE FLOOD RISK OF THE ALIAKMONAS HYDROSYSTEM DOWNSTREAM OF THE ASOMATA DAM AND TO EXPLORE STRATEGIC ACTIONS FOR ITS MITIGATION. THE PROJECT WILL BUILD UPON AND EXPAND THE COMPUTATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR HYDRODYNAMIC SIMULATION, WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN DEVELOPED AND EVALUATED AT A ONE-DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS LEVEL FOR VARIOUS STEADY OUTFLOW SCENARIOS FROM THE REGIONAL DITCH AND THE ASOMATA RESERVOIR. UPON SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT, PPC S.A. WILL RECEIVE A COMPUTATIONAL SYSTEM FOR INTEGRATED HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRODYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF THE LOWER ALIAKMONAS RIVER BASIN AND THE REGIONAL DITCH, USING THE HEC-HMS AND HEC-RAS PLATFORMS. THIS SYSTEM WILL DOCUMENT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE AREA UNDER VARIOUS HYDROLOGICAL AND MANAGEMENT SCENARIOS AND WILL EVALUATE MEASURES AND ACTIONS FOR FLOOD RISK REDUCTION, FORMING PART OF A GENERAL STRATEGIC PLAN (MASTER PLAN). |
