| Description: | BLIND PREDICTION CONTESTS UNVEIL THAT NUMERICAL MODELS CANNOT ACCURATELY PREDICT THE SEISMIC RESPONSE OF MASONRY STRUCTURES, EVEN IF THE COMPONENT LEVEL BEHAVIOR OF THE MASONRY WALLS IS KNOWN. THIS IS A HINT THAT IT IS THE ASSUMPTIONS MADE TO SCALE UP FROM COMPONENT TO SYSTEM LEVEL BEHAVIOR THAT NEED TO BE IMPROVED. TO THIS END MORE SYSTEM LEVEL SHAKE TABLE TESTS ARE NEEDED. IN PARALLEL, IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT OFTENTIMES A STATISTICAL VALIDATION PROCEDURE OF THE MODELS (NAMELY PREDICTING THE STATISTICS OF THE RESPONSES TO A SET OF GROUND MOTIONS, EACH ONE EXCITING A VIRGIN SPECIMEN) IS THE ONLY VIABLE ONE. THEREFORE, MULTIPLE SHAKE TABLE TESTS OF MASONRY BUILDINGS ARE NEEDED. TO REDUCE THE COST OF SUCH TESTS AND MAKE THEM FINANCIALLY FEASIBLE, WE HAVE PROPOSED TO TEST SMALL SCALE PHYSICAL MODELS OF MASONRY BUILDINGS (ON THE ORDER OF 1:15) IN THE CENTRIFUGE. SUCH PHYSICAL MODELS CAN BE MANUFACTURED WITH 3D PRINTING. IN THIS ERC PROJECT DURING THE LAST 6 YEARS WE HAVE BEEN EXPLORING WAYS OF CREATING SUCH PHYSICAL MODELS. IN THE LAST YEAR OF THE PROJECT, WE WILL PERFORM CENTRIFUGE TESTS IN FIXED-BASED AND BASE ISOLATED MASONRY SPECIMENS AND USED THEM TO IMPRVE NUMERICAL MODELLING TECHNIQUES. |
