Description: | LIRA PROJECT AIMS TO DEVELOP A NOVEL METHOD FOR ESTIMATING LANDSLIDE SUSCEPTIBILITY, HAZARD, AND RISK BY COMBINING TRADITIONAL GEOTECHNICAL INDICES, MACHINE LEARNING, AND ADVANCED STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES. THE METHOD WILL INTEGRATE VARIOUS DATA INPUTS SUCH AS TOPOGRAPHICAL, GEOLOGICAL, CLIMATIC, AND LAND USE FACTORS TO GENERATE COMPREHENSIVE MAPS FOR CYPRUS, A COUNTRY PRONE TO LANDSLIDES DUE TO ITS GEOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS. BY ADDRESSING THE LACK OF RISK REDUCTION POLICIES, THE PROJECT WILL ASSIST LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN IMPLEMENTING SAFER DEVELOPMENT MEASURES AND FOSTERING SUSTAINABLE GROWTH. IT ALIGNS WITH CYPRUS'S SMART SPECIALIZATION STRATEGY, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF RISK PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT. UPON SUCCESSFUL VALIDATION, THE TOOL CAN BE ADAPTED FOR USE IN OTHER REGIONS GLOBALLY, OFFERING SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL FOR EXTERNAL FUNDING AND WIDESPREAD APPLICATION. |
