Description: THE PROGRAMMATIC AGREEMENT IMPLEMENTS COOPERATION BETWEEN THE MUNICIPALITY OF NISYROS AND THE NATIONAL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS (NTUA), WHICH AIMS TO PROTECT AGAINST ROCKFALLS AND LANDSLIDES ON THE SW, SE, AND NE SLOPES OF THE HILL ON WHICH THE HOLY MONASTERY OF PANAGIA SPILIANI IS FOUNDED. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED USING MODERN GROUND-BASED AND AERIAL DIGITAL MEANS, WITH THE AIM OF DETERMINING NON-INVASIVE SOLUTIONS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN THE AESTHETIC ENVIRONMENT OF THE AREA.
THE PURPOSE OF THE RESEARCH IS THEREFORE THE GEOTECHNICAL ANALYSIS OF THE STABILITY ACCORDING TO THE SPECIAL ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VOLCANIC SLOPES, THE GEOTECHNICAL HETEROGENEITY IN HEIGHT AND LENGTH, THE PROGRESSIVE FAILURE OF THE SPECIFIC GEOMATERIALS OVER TIME, THE IMPACT OF WATER UPON THEM, THE COASTAL AND WIND EROSION, THE INABILITY TO ACCESS THE REMOTE SLOPES FOR RECORDING MEASUREMENTS WITH CONVENTIONAL METHODS AND THE CONSEQUENT REQUIREMENT FOR INVESTIGATION WITH REMOTE DIGITAL IMAGING METHODS, SUCH AS GROUND SCANNER LASER SCANNER LIDAR AND UAV, FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF STABILITY SOLUTIONS WHILE PRESERVING THE AESTHETICS OF THE SCENERY AND THE PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT.
FOR THIS PROGRAM, THE EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM THE WORK CARRIED OUT UNDER THE PROGRAMMATIC AGREEMENT FOR THE REMAINING SECTION, WHICH HOWEVER DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME RISK CHARACTERISTICS AND GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS, WILL BE UTILIZED.
